CHAPTER 14

Lucy

Dear Lucy,

I’m stateside now. It’s always strange to be home because I really don’t have anything to do other than hang out with my cat. I spend a lot of my time online doing research. I don’t have any friends outside my team. I don’t go to church—I’d probably be struck by a lightning bolt if I tried to enter one—nor am I involved in any social activities. It sounds pathetic really, but since I could be called away at any time, I can’t really maintain relationships like that. I’m not completely alone though. My teammates all live in the area, and we do hit bars or hang at each other’s places. It’s good to spend time together that’s not all work or work talk.

Sometimes I wonder how a girlfriend or wife would fit into all that. I’d constantly be leaving her to maintain those things on her own or raise kids mostly by herself. She could never tell her friends what her husband does for a living. How would she explain why I was always away? How long until she would resent me for that kind of life? I assume people generally want their spouses around. I’ve made my metaphorical bed, so now I have to sleep in it.

I don’t make New Year’s resolutions either. There’s no particular reason for it, I just don’t. If there’s something I want to change, start doing, or whatever, I just do it. I don’t wait until a specific day to start. If there’s something you need to change about yourself or your life, just do it. Aren’t we all adults?
